DIY — AC fundamentals

Healthy air conditioners for a sustainable future

Terms worth knowing before you spec, buy, or audit an AC: COP is cooling output over electrical input at one rated condition; ISEER is India's seasonal efficiency ratio, averaged over a full cooling season — and the basis of every BEE star label.

Star ratings run 1 to 5 — higher stars mean higher ISEER and lower running cost for the same duty. Refrigerant choice (R32, R410A, and the older R22 being phased down) drives both efficiency and environmental footprint.

Tool

Cooling coil calculator

First-order estimates of the refrigerant suction/discharge pressure (from the saturated temperature you enter) or the water-side pressure drop (from flow, circuiting and water temperature). Geometry and fin/tube choices refine the water-side and face-velocity estimates — they do not replace a manufacturer coil rating.

Airflow auto-adjusts from the design coil velocity and the free-flow area, so it changes when the tube pitch, fins or tube size change. Edit the airflow field to override.

Air quality

Outdoor AQI sets the floor for indoor air

Every air conditioner draws its air from somewhere. When the outdoor AQI climbs, a system pulling in unfiltered fresh air (or a room with a leaky envelope) drags that pollution indoors with it — this is why filtration grade and fresh-air ratio matter as much as tonnage in a proper HVAC design.

  • PM2.5 & PM10 — fine and coarse particulates; the WHO annual guideline for PM2.5 is 5 µg/m³, a level most Indian metros exceed year-round.
  • CO₂ & ventilation rate — indoor CO₂ climbing past ~1000 ppm signals a room isn't getting enough fresh-air exchange (ACH) for its occupancy.
  • Filtration grade — a MERV-13 or HEPA stage in the air handling path meaningfully cuts indoor PM2.5, at a fan-power and pressure-drop cost we help size for.

Tool

Fault diagnostics

A symptom-led starting point, not a substitute for a technician once refrigerant, electrical, or the compressor are in question — those checks need gauges, training, and (for refrigerant) an F-gas certification.

    Tool

    Check — Gas Charging needed

The quickest field check for low charge: measure the air temperature going into the indoor unit (return) and coming out of it (supply) with a thermometer at the grille and at the nearest register, a few minutes after startup.

Normal split is roughly 8–12°C (14–22°F) at typical indoor conditions (~24–27°C return, ~50% RH) — consistent with a split AC's design evaporating temperature of 4–7°C. Hotter/more humid return air, low outdoor temperature, or a heat-pump defrost cycle can shift the expected split, so treat a borderline reading as a prompt to look further, not a verdict.
